  We use "estar" mainly to indicate location and temporary situations or conditions:

- Los chicos están en el parque. (The kids are in the park.)
- Estoy ocupado ahora. (I am busy now.)
- Bangkok está en Tailandia. (Bangkok is in Thailand.)
- Mi hermano está enfermo. (My brother is sick.)
- Mi mujer está deprimida. (my wife is depressed.)
- Miguel está delgado. (Miguel is (looks) thin.) 

  "Estar" is also used to express location in time:

- Estamos en invierno. (We are in winter.)
- ¿En que año estamos? (What year we are in?)
- Estamos a tres horas de Barcelona. (We are three hours away from Barcelona.)

  "Estar" also express readiness:

- Su coche estará para el lunes. (Your car will be ready by Monday.)

  The use of "estar" with a few idiomatic expressions:
Estar de más: (to be unnecessary.)
  Tus excusas están de más. (Your excuses are unnecessary.)
Estar de acuerdo: (to agree.)
  No estoy de acuerdo con tus planes. (I do not agree with your plans.)
Estar en ello: (to be working on it.)
  No te preocupes, que estoy en ello. (Don't worry, I am on it.)
Estar bien: to be OK, in good health. (It is also used as "enough".)
  Mi padre no está bien. Está enfermo. (My father is not OK. He is sick.)
Estar en todo: to keep track of everything.
  Aquí es imposible hacer trampa. El profesor está en todo.
 (It is impossible to cheat here. The teacher keeps track of everything.)
Estar a punto de: (to be just about to)
  Llegaste cuando estaba a punto de salir.
  (You arrived when I was just about to go out.)
Estar conforme: (to be in agreement)
  Miguel no está conforme con sus notas.
  (Miguel does not agree with his grades.)
Estar de vuelta: (to be back)
  ¿Ya estás de vuelta? (Are you back already?)

   "Estar" is also used as an auxiliary verb in the present progressive:

- Estoy buscando trabajo.
  (I am looking for a job.)
- Los jugadores están saliendo al campo.
  (The players are stepping on the pitch.)
