The pluscuamperfecto describes events that took place in a time previous to another past event:
- Cuando llegué la fiesta ya había comenzado.
(When I arrived the party had already started.)
- Cuando llegó la policía el ladrón ya se había ido
(When the police arrived the thief had already left.)
The past perfect is formed with a compound verb. In English, the auxiliary verb of the past perfect is "had". In Spanish is the imperfect form of "haber":

Note that the first and third person singular have the same conjugation.
- Juan tenía hambre porque no había comido nada.
(Juan was hungry because he had not eaten anything.)
- Las chicas gritaron porque habían visto una cucaracha en la cocina.
(The girls screamed because they had seen a roach in the kitchen.)
