 The pluperfect subjunctive tells us what was happening in the past. Note that the verb in the main clause must be in a past tense, and also note how the pluperfect subjunctive takes place before the main action:

- Javier no creyó que hubiera llovido tanto en el verano.
   (Javier did not believe it would have rained that much in the summer.)
- No habría venido si hubiera sabido lo difícil que es encontrar lugar aquí.
  (I would not have come had I known how hard it is to find a place here.)
- Todos esperábamos que hubieras venido anoche.
  (We were hoping that you would come last night.)

  The pluperfect subjunctive is formed with the following forms plus the past participle of the appropriate verb:

  We also use the pluperfect subjunctive to express a wish in the past or with ojalá:
- ¡Quién lo hubiera pensado! (Who would have thought about it!)
- ¡Ojalá lo hubiera sabido antes! (I wish I had known that before!)
- ¡Ojalá te hubieras callado! (I wish you had kept quiet!)
